Saturday, September 14th, 2013. Bench Lake to Rae Lakes

“Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world.” --John Muir

Today was the only slip on the trail...but no injuries!

Trying to get that perfect picture.  The lake was so smooth when we woke up that we went down by the shore and had our morning coffee.  We had two miles to hike before we were back on the JMT so we had to get out of camp early.  We managed to get out by 8am.

We had blue skies by the time we left!

Once back on the JMT, we came across one of the few Marmuts we saw.
We had to laugh at his choice of the top of the rock for the restroom!

Lake Marjorie

Coming up Pinchot Pass

At Pinchot Pass, elevation 12,130 feet.

We were taking a break, enjoying the views
and watching the holes in my shoes get bigger!

This was the couple that sang Happy Birthday to Jason the day before.  I asked if I could get
a picture with them.  They were in the late 60's/early 70's and still out enjoying a
backpack trip.  I want to be like them someday!!

Another day of blue skies early.  If it was going to rain, it was always in the afternoons.

On of the lakes along the trail and one of the few signs that did have any etchings!

The trail goes along Wood's Creek and this was one of the sections that seemed to be longer than the mileage in the book.  It seemed to take forever to reach the one person at a time sign. It was around this section that we ran into a Ranger.  We were talking about our hike and asked her what time we should be on top of Mt. Whitney for sunrise--she replied that we should just camp on top!

The suspension bridge across Woods Creek.  I had to hand off my poles to Jason so that I could cross.  We met up with The Aussies and The Fasters taking break on the other side so we joined them.

A group shot: Aaron, Kelsey, Ken, Julia-Anne, Jason and Me

Seeing some color along the trail and I think it is Dollar Lake.  Heard it was a
great place to swim but it was past 4pm and we wanted to get to camp.

Coming into the Rae Lakes area and Fin Dome off in the distance.
We couldn't figure out if it was gong to rain so we put the pack covers on just to be safe.

The Ranger Station sign at Rae Lakes had a weather
forecast...which, shockingly, was wrong.

Deer down by the lake

It was getting close to 5:30pm and Jason was getting crabby wondering where the camp was.  The book mentioned camps near the south end of middle Rae Lake.  He was ahead of me on the trail and I was asking if he wanted to pull out the GPS and enter the coordinates for camp.  Then I saw him go down on his butt.  Little did I know that section of trail was covered in mud. He was okay and we were very happy to see this sign.  We made camp and tried to stay out of the rain.  Lights out at 9pm

Miles Hiked Today:  18.5   Total Miles Hiked:  213.1    Total JMT Miles Hiked: 173
Elevation: 10,800 up to 12,130 down to 8500 back up to camp around 10,500.
